MATH BLAST

RULES AND REGULATIONS

ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST BE CURRENTLY ENROLLED IN A 6th  GRADE MATH CLASS. Schools will be permitted to bring a total of 10 percent of their students enrolled in a 6th grade math class, or up to 10 students, whichever is greater. Schools must send one advisor for every five students. Each advisor will be responsible for the conduct of his/her students. Misconduct will disqualify students and may be cause for removal of the school from the competitions in the future.

There will be NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN GATE AND NON-GATE students. A student must participate in the competition that includes the level of math that he/she is currently enrolled in. For example, a 4th 4th or 5th 5th grade student currently enrolled in a 6th grade math class MAY compete in the 6th Grade Math Blast. On the other hand any student currently enrolled in a 7th  or 8th grade math class MAY ONLY ATTEND the Junior High Math Superbowl and not the 6th  Grade Math Blast. A 6th  grade student currently enrolled in a high school math class MAY ONLY ATTEND the High School Math Competition and not the 6th Grade Math Blast.

Each event will be 50 minutes. The FIRST STAGE will be an individual competition that is composed of fifty (50)  multiple-choice questions based on basic computation. Talking may not be permitted during the exams. No calculators or mechanical devices will be permitted during the exams. In the FIRST STAGE no two students from the same school may sit next to each other. If a student leaves the classroom during an event, he/she may NOT return. In the event of a tie, previously selected weighted problems will be used to determine the winners.

The Binary Star is a two-person event. An individual CANNOT compete in this event without a partner from his/her school. Each person on the team works the same set of problems individually during the first 30 minutes. In the last 20 minutes the team members compare their papers. During this time, teammates may discuss quietly the work they are doing. The team will turn in one answer sheet. Each school is allowed as many teams as their school can accommodate. Calculators may not be used in this event. Scoring is similar to the First Stage.

Ten trophies and at least five ribbons will be given for each event. All participants will be given certificates.
